Using the Dead To Fight A Battle

I suppose we’re not supposed to see this as anything more than a coincidence, but the drama between Chris Brown and Drake has now reached a level that is more degrading than ever before.

Last week, Chris shot a video for the upcoming track, “They Don’t Know”; the first single from his sixth studio album entitled X.

The song features some unused vocals from the late R&B singer, Aaliyah. He confirmed the news this morning while speaking on his BET Awards nominations at a press conference for the ceremony.

This of course comes a few months after the release of Chris’ rival appearing on a never-before heard of track by the singer called “Enough Said”.

Drake has spoken of his love of Aaliyah many times — some say to the point of obsession — and is said to be working on an album featuring more “new” songs from her to be released in the future.

Perhaps no conclusions should be drawn, but let’s be real — this is seriously revolting. Don’t bring the dead into your childish battles, guys.

Besides, her music was way better than anything either of you have ever released.

The Return of Mother Monster

She’s ba-ack!

The one and only Lady Gaga is slowly, but surely getting back to performing after undergoing hip surgery back in February.

The extravagant singer took the stage in an impromptu performance Thursday night at the Gramercy Park Hotel in New York City.

Turns out a good friend and collaborator, jazz musician Brian Newman was performing there that evening and she surprised the crowd by joining him for a rendition of “Someone To Watch Over Me”.

“Thanks to the 1&only @ladygaga for coming out to @GPHhotel tonight an singing a song!!” Newman tweeted after the show at the Rose Bar.”

The “Marry the Night” singer and the bandleader are close pals as the latter is best known as Lady Gaga’s go-to-jazz player having performed with her on the Today show, ABC’s A Very Gaga Thanksgiving as well as in the studio. The hitmaker has also been known to drop in on his shows in the past, including a 2011 appearance at the Oak Room.

No word on when she’ll head back to her full-on spectacles on-stage, but it looks like the world will be hers for the taking once more very soon.

Welcome back, Gaga!

J. Lo’s New Song With Pitbull Sounds Like Old Song With Pitbull

jennifer-lopez-live-it-up-cover

Yes, she’s done this already.

Twice.

Hoping to hit gold once more, Jennifer Lopez‘ new single, “Live It Up” features a familiar voice: rapper Pitbull joins her on the track.

After having many misses to properly push her Love? album, the diva finally had a huge jam on her hands with “On The Floor” with the man who calls himself “Mr. Worldwide”.

In case you were counting, this was the third time the two have worked together: he also joined her for the song “Dance Again” from her greatest hits album of the same name just last year.

Personally, this is probably their worst collaboration; it sounds like every bad part of a dance song you’ve heard as of late, but people tend to like that.

Check it out for yourself and form your own opinions after the jump with the official lyric video.

How To Be A “Q.U.E.E.N.”

The booty don’t lie — and neither does the amazing Janelle Monáe.

Coming off a year of popularity thanks to her popular duet with indie pop group fun., the underrated artist is currently gearing up to release The Electric Lady, the follow up to the critically acclaimed The ArchAndroid.

The funk-filled first single, “Q.U.E.E.N.” dropped a week ago and now, the video featuring the also underrated Erykah Badu has been released.

The lyrics of the awesome song are all about never letting anyone break the stride that makes a person unique and if anyone knows about that, it’s her.

“Q.U.E.E.N. was inspired by private discussions between Erykah and me”, she shared on her Twitter. “It is meant to make you JAM. DANCE. FUNK OUT. and dialogue later…”

…. [the clip] which takes place in an alternate future that casts Monáe and her musical accomplices as exhibits in a living museum, imprisoned there because of some sort of unsavory undermining of authority (or maybe they just got freaked out by Badu’s hair).

The song is definitely climbing through like a proper earworm, with others even wondering if the universal feel to its lyrics can be perceived as a gay anthem (no, not because of the title) — either way, this pure masterpiece deserves to be heard over and over again.

So go on and let that inner freak out without apologies — head on after the jump for the jewel in the crown known as “Q.U.E.E.N.”

Kris Kross Member Passes Away

tumblr_mcwijwob6M1qmnmo6o1_500

A few months after reuniting into the twosome that made him famous, Kris Kross member Chris Kelly (the one on the left) was found dead in his Atlanta home after an apparent drug overdose. He was only 34 years old.

Along with Chris “Daddy Mac” Smith, Kelly (better known as “Mac Daddy”) catapulted to fame with the hip-hop hit, “Jump” and their style of wearing their clothes backwards, which was pretty much emulated everywhere after that.

The duo recently reunited for the 20th anniversary of So So Def Recordings, headed by producer Jermaine Dupri (they were signed to the label), but according to Kelly’s mother, the years following his height of fame were filled with “an extensive history of drug use”; so much so, that when he found himself feeling ill after taking a “speedball” (a combination of heroin and cocaine), she simply took him home to sleep it off as she had done many times before.

According to the report, paramedics initially responded to Kelly’s Atlanta home around 3 PM EST — after his mother called 911 asking for medical assistance.

When help arrived, paramedics found 34-year-old Kelly lying on the living room couch — unresponsive and with “no life signs.” The medics attempted to revive Kelly, to no avail.

Kelly was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead a few hours later.

Dupri, who discovered the duo in an Atlanta shopping mall 23 years ago released a heartbreaking statement:

“To the world, Chris Kelly was MacDaddy but to me he was the son I never had.

When I think about it I spent more time with Chris and Chris than damn near anybody in my whole life, so you can imagine how bad this hurts. I will always love you Chris, and I will never let the world forget you. May god bless your soul.”

His partner in music, Chris Smith, also released a statement, expressing the sorrow of missing his “best friend” and “brother”.

“Our friendship began as little boys in first grade. We grew up together. It was a blessing to achieve the success, travel the world and entertain Kris Kross fans all around the world with my best friend,” he continued. “It is what we wanted to do and what brought us happiness. I will always cherish the memories of the C-Connection.”

“KRIS KROSS FOREVER, the ‘MAC DADDY’ and ‘DADDY MAC.’”

Our condolences go out to his loved ones at this time.
