A few months after reuniting into the twosome that made him famous, Kris Kross member Chris Kelly (the one on the left) was found dead in his Atlanta home after an apparent drug overdose. He was only 34 years old.
Along with Chris “Daddy Mac” Smith, Kelly (better known as “Mac Daddy”) catapulted to fame with the hip-hop hit, “Jump” and their style of wearing their clothes backwards, which was pretty much emulated everywhere after that.
The duo recently reunited for the 20th anniversary of So So Def Recordings, headed by producer Jermaine Dupri (they were signed to the label), but according to Kelly’s mother, the years following his height of fame were filled with “an extensive history of drug use”; so much so, that when he found himself feeling ill after taking a “speedball” (a combination of heroin and cocaine), she simply took him home to sleep it off as she had done many times before.
According to the report, paramedics initially responded to Kelly’s Atlanta home around 3 PM EST — after his mother called 911 asking for medical assistance.
When help arrived, paramedics found 34-year-old Kelly lying on the living room couch — unresponsive and with “no life signs.” The medics attempted to revive Kelly, to no avail.
Kelly was immediately transported to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead a few hours later.
Dupri, who discovered the duo in an Atlanta shopping mall 23 years ago released a heartbreaking statement:
“To the world, Chris Kelly was MacDaddy but to me he was the son I never had.
When I think about it I spent more time with Chris and Chris than damn near anybody in my whole life, so you can imagine how bad this hurts. I will always love you Chris, and I will never let the world forget you. May god bless your soul.”
His partner in music, Chris Smith, also released a statement, expressing the sorrow of missing his “best friend” and “brother”.
“Our friendship began as little boys in first grade. We grew up together. It was a blessing to achieve the success, travel the world and entertain Kris Kross fans all around the world with my best friend,” he continued. “It is what we wanted to do and what brought us happiness. I will always cherish the memories of the C-Connection.”
“KRIS KROSS FOREVER, the ‘MAC DADDY’ and ‘DADDY MAC.’”
Our condolences go out to his loved ones at this time.
