I guess we’re supposed to feel sorry for her, but actress Reese Witherspoon is making the entire story of her drunken arrest sound more like an attempt to keep her clean image.
Finally coming through on a cancelled interview for Good Morning America following the mishap, the actress broke her silence about what transpired when her husband, Jim Toth, was picked up for DUI last month.
“We went out to dinner in Atlanta and we had one too many glasses of wine,” she explained. “We thought we were fine to drive and we absolutely were not…We know better and we shouldn’t have done that.”
“I saw [the police officer] arresting my husband and I literally panicked,” she went on. “I told him I was pregnant. I’m not pregnant. I said all kinds of crazy things.”
She did relent and admit she was “disrespectful” to the officer — which led to her being cuffed as well — and says that the role of Elle Woods made her feel like she could take on the law.
And obviously, that wasn’t the case.
“I played a lawyer in a movie so many times I think I am a lawyer,” she said. “And, clearly, I’m not a lawyer because I got arrested.”
She played her in two movies, by the way (Legally Blonde and its sequel) — but OK.
“When a police officer tells you to stay in the car, you stay in the car,” she added. “I learned that for sure.”
And we learned that Reese had a really dumb moment.
