Wildlife photographer Vearl Brown snapped this photo of a yawning bear at the Saint Louis Zoo in Missouri last week. The 4-foot-tall bear revealed a 12-inch long tongue and impeccable fingernails to stunned zoo visitors. And while this may seem a bit odd (and mostly sexy), the sun bear’s tongue length is no mistake of nature–it is designed to forage for food like honey and sausage.
