A new delicacy in China is being criticized: A part-fried fish is served alive on a plate for diners. In order to keep the carp alive, chefs cook its body but wrap its head in a wet cloth to keep it breathing, before covering it in sauce and serving in on a plate.

This is one of the most disturbing things I’ve seen in a while. Cruel, very cruel.
I agree with Jorge , very cruel and disturbing as for the news crew whats so funny about it?
Leave it to the chinese to think of a new way to torture living beings. They have no shame for rendering many of the world’s species extinct or close to extinction. Disgusting.
I really want to fry the guy up who thought of this and serve him to his family while he was still alive. How can anyone think that this is acceptable….
Strange. But talk about overreacting. It’s a fish. They don’t have the biological mechanisms for suffering like higher order animals.
i bet buddha would be happy
Your wrong David. I agree this is overacting and fish stupidly jump out of water every day and suffocate and there’s just as much suffering in nature, but to say a fish doesn’t have the capacity to feel suffering like us is so uneducated. What makes you think that? Just because it’s small? Fish can feel fear, panic, desperation and pain just like everything else bigger than a tennis ball. You’ve clearly never owned pets then if you don’t know how fish can recognize you and become excited by your presence.
Well, I don’t like seafood. So this would’t work for me. David is right they do not feel pain, no matter how many disney movies you watch. I don’t agree with this but hey I hate seafood.
Maybe fishes don’t have those mechanism, but it’s still cruel and chinese are stil fuc*** up people who eat digusting thing
This is nothing new. One of the seniors from my old archery club in a Singaporean university has attempted to do the same 10 years ago. According to him, he apparently failed. Which explains why he is in exile from the sport. Cos he’s a failure.
david is wrong. Obviously. A fish feels pain, therefore it can suffer. A fish can be distressed, and therefore it can suffer.
If you take a fish out of water, it flails. It does not flail in water however. It flails because it panics because it can no longer control its movement nor can it breathe. It’s equivalent to putting a human in space without a suit – his behavior would match that of a fish, because all living beings stressed to such a degree will panic.
If to subject a fish to pain while viewing its neural activity, usually by MRI, you will see elevated levels akin to a human feeling pain.
david is wrong.
@david
Might not be a “high order” animal, but it is still a living creature.
Many animals eat other animals while still alive, but I believe that our human species have evolved enough to not eat and torture a creature at the same time.
This is sickening,
if your going to eat a poor defenceless animal at least end its suffering rather than tear away its flesh while its alive enduring a slow agonising death.
How can those filthy chinks laugh and poke the poor fish like that? i’d be sick if i saw that in front of me
Fish may not have the same pain receptors as humans but its still torture to them. This is just utterly evil. There is no benefit from keeping the fish alive rather than killing it just before cooking, its just sick sadistic and evil.

I’m Chinese and I find that repulsive. Please don’t generalize one sadistic chef’s fetish with the entire culture.
I wouldn’t be able to eat a fish staring up at me like that and still breathing, that’s just cruel. I don’t know anyone who could look at that and still eat it without throwing up.
Actually, many fish are filletted or skinned while they are still alive to keep it as fresh as possible. In pretty well every country. I’ve done it myself and never given it a thought. Many of you on here that are outraged have eaten beef and chicken that was either improperly stored before killing or killed improperly so as to cause the animal great pain. If you ever saw the conditions that mass produced chickens are subjected to before they are killed, you would probably puke. Beef is still inhumanely treated at many plants around the world before slaughter.
Get a grip people! Quit acting so two faced. Do you honestly think that beef and chicken and pigs feel no pain before they are slaughtered? But I bet many of you will have one of those 3 food groups tonite for supper.
