An Indian man was beaten and coerced into marring a woman he’s dated on-and-off for 10 years.

Video footage shows the groom looking shaken, crying and delirious during the wedding festivities as those around him–including the bride–are happily celebrating. Wedding guests are seen holding him up and even force his hands to place a ring on the woman’s toe. His hands are moved together to place flowers around the woman’s neck–even though he seems limp, weak and unwilling to participate.

But according to the bride, her family and neighbors, he was going to marry her whether he liked it or not.

“He had refused to marry me,” bride Lakshmi told reporters. “Youth in the area have got me justice.” She says that he had made promises in the past to marry her, but skipped town and refused to honor his words. She added: “His mother had disagreed to the marriage due to which even he too refused to marry me. Now he has agreed for the marriage.”

His “change of heart” came after the woman’s neighbors found him, beat him, then marched him into a temple to get married.
