James Holmes, the man convicted in the horrible shooting at the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, CO has been charged with a staggering 142 counts in the actions that took place on July 20, including two charges each of first degree murder for the 12 people who died, and 116 charges of attempted murder — two each for the 58 people who were injured.

He was also charged with one count of possessing an explosive device and one count of unlawful use of a deadly weapon.

The 24 counts of murder have been split into two separate categories so “prosecutors [can have] 2 options to nail Holmes for first degree murder. They can either establish that the crime was premeditated OR that Holmes acted with “extreme indifference to the value of human life.”

The same deal goes with the other 114 charges — “58 counts of attempted premeditated murder, and 58 counts of attempted murder with “extreme indifference.”

More after the jump.

In related news, the woman who turned down the theater for helping to her for her daughter’s funeral expenses is planning to sue them.

According to TMZ, Shirley Wygal; the mother of slain victim of Rebecca Wingo, has retained an L.A. based lawyer in preparation to possibly sue the Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, claiming that she believes that with a high-profile movie such as The Dark Knight Rises playing, the emergency doors (which Holmes entered through) should’ve been protected with a security guard or at least alarmed.

There is another lawsuit pending against Century 16 and Cinemark (the corporation that owns the theater), but the people behind that plan to go after Warner Bros. (the distributor of the movie) and the doctors of James Holmes.
