Rodney King, a man whose name became synonymous with the 1992 Los Angeles race riots, was found dead early Sunday morning, according to TMZ. He was 47.

King came to the public view when videotape of him being beaten by white police officers was broadcast all over news outlets in 1991. The policemen were eventually acquitted of any wrong doing, which sparked anger from the African-American community and caused destruction and chaos throughout the city.

Following a few more arrests and stints in rehab due to drug abuse, he became engaged in 2010 to a juror who was a part of the civil suit he brought against the city. She was the one to find him dead in his swimming pool. Efforts to revive him failed and he was officially pronounced dead not long afterward.

Rest in peace.
