An Indianapolis woman was arrested on charges of neglect after police found her home infested with roaches, rats and six inches of standing sewage, last Monday.
Susan Hensley, 45, kept a 6-year-old and 15-year-old in a home that officials described as the worst case they’ve ever seen.
When police investigated the home after receiving a tip, they found cockroaches crawling in the refrigerator, and on the walls; a foot-long rat scurrying across the floor, and a mattress covered in feces–where one of the children sleeps. An 11-year-old boy that was visiting the home told police he was bitten by one of the rats.
“I personally would rather live under a freeway bridge than live in a rat-infested, maggot-infested, cockroach-infested home,” county prosecutor Carl Brizzi told reporters.
The conditions of the home are so bad, health officials fear it will pose serious health risks to neighbors or anyone contracted to clean up the mess. Hensley is being held on $15,000 bond.
